Hidden Safari

The Safari Picture
Safari Glasses to find the hidden picture
The safari Hidden picture is of a monkey hanging on a tree.

Project Description:
For this project, we learned about the artist Henri Rousseau who liked to paint the jungle with hidden objects in it. We learned how to draw upside down so our brains wouldn't stress too much about the object and it would just focus more on the lines. To start this project we got to make our safari glasses out of construction paper and red transparent plastic. We worked on our gluing and cutting skills. Then we choose a picture of an animal and placed it upside down beside us. We then got to drawing with a light blue colored pencil on some paper. Once we got our animal-drawn we went over the drawing with warm-colored crayons (orange, red, yellow, pink). Therefore, when we would look into our glasses we would see the hidden object since that was drawn in blue (cool color). We made sure to cover the whole paper with patterns (circles, squiggles, lines) so our object was hidden.  Once we were done we got to look through our glasses to see our hidden animal.

Extension Activity:
This activity was so much fun. I think another way you could use this concept would be by drawing a ton of objects onto the piece of paper with the blue colored pencil. Then covering all those objects up with warm-colored crayons (red, orange, yellow, pink). Once it is all covered you can play an Ispy game with the kids and make sure on the back of the piece of paper you write down all the objects you drew. Once you think you found all the objects without the glasses, you put the glasses on to see if you found them all.
