Dot Day Art Project
Dot Day Activity
Activity: Today (September 15th) we celebrated International Dot Day. We started off by listening to the read-out-loud book "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. After we listened to this story, we grabbed a coffee filter and different mediums- paint, markers, crayons, and sharpies. We put our coffee filters on a paper plate to make the cleanup process easier. You start by creating your dot masterpiece, once you are done with this step you grab some watercolor paint, water, and a medium-sized paintbrush. By going over the coffee filter with the watercolor you will be able to see what mediums bleed or don't bleed to make a pretty tie-dye effect.
Extension Activity: Instead of these being individual art pieces, the teacher could then combine all of their dots into one masterpiece by hanging them together to make a chain. You could also get a big white piece of paper and section off different parts of the paper. The students would get the chance to create their dot creation onto the paper to add their own twist to the project. Integrating math into this activity, the teacher could ask the students to count how many dots were in their sections, and then as a group, we would add them all together to see how many dots were added onto our white piece of paper.
